Celtic Nations

Alba, Eire, Breizh, Cymru, Kernow, Mannin

The Celtic Nations are the six nations/ geographical areas of western Europe where a Celtic language is still spoken. It is true that other areas have elements of Celtic culture that survive into the modern day but the languages spoken there are not from the Celtic branch of Indo-European language. Galician for example is a Romance language.

Of the Celtic languages spoken, Welsh probably is in a better place than the others. It is widely used by young people and today's Welsh culture blends tradition with modern - almost everything from electronica to modern art can be consumed through the medium of Cymraeg. Cornish on the other hand is a revived tongue but one that it gaining recognition and prestige.

Celtic languages and culture are celebrated in various events such as the National Mòd (Scotland), the Eisteddfod (Wales), Lorient Interceltic Festival (Britanny), the Celtic Media Festival and the Pan-Celtic Festival (Ireland).

Here's to small nations, old but modern languages and Celtic solidarity.
